In the rare but welcome warm sunshine myself and my team of novice journalists travelled a short distance west of Cork city to interview and picture one of the latest additions to the rapidly growing family of American vehicles within the Munster region.
Fresh off the boat is Peter Burke’s 1954 Chevrolet ½ tonne pick-up truck. Peter a member of GAScc has just imported this fabulous Chevy truck from Kansas. This very original truck screams with character.
Peter a lover of American classics has pined to own a Chevy truck for over 20 years after seeing them in the flesh while on a trip to America. But just this year his dream came closer to reality as his brother in law, a pilot in the United States Air Force called Peter and explained that he was parting with his 54 Chevy pick-up, the original truck Peter fell in love with nearly 20 years ago. This truck was a daily driver for Peter’s brother in law Don since 1976 when he purchased it for the measly price of $700.00. The truck was used to carry tools and such for Don who had various properties in the States. About six years ago the Chevy was parked up in Dons yard waiting for its next owner.
The truck arrived in Dublin port only last week, almost three months later than its scheduled delivery date. It was collected with a trailer and brought it to its new home in Cork Peter has big plans for this old girl to keep her as original as possible and do a full body off restoration in the near future. But for now a quick tidy and service and then knock some fun out of his new toy first. He finds the most appealing feature of the truck to be the famous Chevrolet grille as you can see from the pictures. The body is in good nick and just needs a bit of tidying. She has a straight six under the hood with a three speed manual column shift. She sits on chunky tyres and the alloys top a perfect package.
GAScc wishes Peter the best of luck with his truck and we look forward to seeing him with the Chevy on many trips and shows in the future. It is already booked for its maiden voyage to Kilbeggan where it will join a convoy of at least another 15 other American vehicles from Cork to the largest American car show in Ireland. We are convinced it will fit in well.
If this one ever comes up for sale ill be the first one bidding.
Best of luck to Peter and welcome to GAScc.
